EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS)
Children are admitted to the Pre-School in the school year in which they
celebrate their 3rd birthday and move to the Nursery at the start of the next
school year. In EYFS, from the age of 3 to the end of the Reception Year,
children follow the Prime and Specific Areas of Learning and Development that
precede the English National Curriculum:
Prime Areas:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and
- Language Physical Development
Specific Areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
The Areas of Learning and Development focus on the total development of the
child, although strong emphasis is still placed on language and numeracy.
Whether literacy and numeracy topics are spread across the day or presented as
single units, both of these curricular elements are firmly in place by the end
of the Reception Year. This enables the children to make a smooth transition to
the Literacy and Numeracy programmes in Year 1.
Careful monitoring of each child’s progress throughout the EYFS is essential
in ensuring that they are making progress and that particular difficulties in
any of the areas of learning are identified and addressed. When children join
our school they are given their own Pupil Profile folder, which is used to
record their development and progress in the Prime and Specific areas described above. This
folder is referred to in parent/teacher meetings and parents are free to look at
the folder at any time, at their convenience.
