FOUNDATION SUBJECTS
Children at PHIC follow a wide range of activities in addition to the core
subjects.
These reflect the Foundation subjects specified in the English National
Curriculum.
Art and Design
Children experience a wide range of artistic activities, and media. Relevant
skills are taught, matched to the growth and development of the children, who
are also introduced to the work of artists, both past and present. Artwork feeds
into rich displays that celebrate our children’s work and make our school a
stimulating place to be.
Design and Technology
The children learn to use a variety of tools and materials to plan, make and
evaluate objects, working models and their immediate surroundings. Children
develop constructional and simple engineering skills.
Geography
Children begin by investigating their local area and learning about a
contrasting area abroad. This is extended as they progress through school and
develop an understanding of physical, human and environmental geography linked
to an understanding of globalisation. Themes include weather, settlement and
environmental change.
History
At Key Stage 1, children are given opportunities to develop an awareness of the
past, how to find out about it and how it differs from the present. At Key Stage
2, children learn about important historical worldwide events and also study
ancient civilisations.
Music
Children throughout the school have opportunities to sing in arranged groups or
individually and to play both tuned and un-tuned instruments. This, combined
with learning about music of many different types, encourages the children to
have confidence in, and gain pleasure from music.
Physical Education (P.E.)
P.E. promotes physical activity, fair play, honest competition and regard for
safety. It develops skills in dance, basic gymnastics, team games, netball,
hockey, football, cricket, tennis, swimming and athletics.
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
Aspects of PSHE are regularly taught both formally and informally. Children
learn to respect the views and rights of others, whilst being taught to
understand their responsibilities to other people and the role of society.
Health education and the need for basic hygiene are taught at appropriate age
levels.
Second Language
As an international school, we believe that learning a second language from an
early age should be a priority. It will therefore be introduced at PHIC at the
earliest possible stage in the school’s development. For those who are not
native English-speakers, additional help is provided.
Religious Education
R.E. is provided to all pupils. It acknowledges the individual faith of each
pupil whilst teaching them to understand and respect the faiths of others.
Parents have the right to withdraw their child from assemblies and religious
education lessons, during which time alternative, supervised teaching is
provided.
Reproduction and Sexual Relationships
The school approaches ‘sex education’ with care and sensitivity and always
within the context of loving, stable relationships and the family unit. In
adherence to the National Curriculum and forming part of Science, Religious
Education and English lessons, children are taught first about the birth and
care of babies, both animal and human, and later about human reproduction and
sexual responsibility. (NB: Parents retain the right to withdraw their child
from this part of the curriculum if they so wish.)
