CORE SUBJECTS
English
The National Literacy Strategy is followed and a Literacy Hour is held, during
which a text is shared with the whole class. Word and sentence work is also
taught as a whole class activity, with emphasis on speaking and listening.
Children read and write in guided reading groups both independently and with the
support of the teacher. Building confidence in both written and oral
communication is given the utmost priority.
Mathematics
The school implements the National Numeracy Strategy. All work is built on a
sound practical and investigative base with increasing emphasis on mental maths
skills including tables and number bonds.
Science
Various schemes of work are used to support planning. In Key Stage 1, Science is
linked to Study Work. Children learn through watching nature and lots of
‘hands-on’ investigations. In Key Stage 2, Science is sometimes taught in
separate units of work. Children are taught to use scientific vocabulary and
methods, involving prediction and fair testing. They are taught to use equipment
appropriately.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
ICT is integrated across the curriculum in varied ways so that children
understand its applications in learning. Pupils are also taught IT skills. The
teaching of ICT equips and enables the children to participate fully in an ever
changing technological environment. Pupils use ICT to find, explore, analyse,
exchange and present information and to use it in an effective way.
